Well, things have decidedly not slowed down this month, even though we’re still mostly staying at home. What was awesome in July? Let’s get into.
Guys, another month has passed of a global pandemic. I found myself finally wishing things would go back to “normal.” I just want to walk out my door without a sense of trepidation. There really aren’t that many more places I want to go. I’m still happy to be mostly at home. But gosh, it’s been a long time, and it’s starting to wear me out.
Worth leaving the house for
We did finally go to a restaurant for the first time since mid-March, and it was stressful, but also delicious. We went to the brand new Thundercat Pub & Diner in Glasgow’s city centre. The service was great, and people were being generally conscientious about social distancing, but we were seated at a table right in the middle of the restaurant, and on the way to the bathroom, so lots of people were walking past us. That part wasn’t my favorite. Also, the neon light is great for ambience but terrible for trying to photograph your food, so sorry about the image below.
Geoff had been looking forward to trying the buffalo chicken deep dish pizza ever since he first saw it on Instagram, and he absolutely loved it. I thought it was good, but I don’t think I liked it as much as he did.
I went for a couple of small plates, street corn and biscuits and gravy. The flavor on everything was good. The corn was a bit dry. In my opinion, if the corn is not exploding in your face, you’re not doing it right. As for the biscuits and gravy, the ratio was way off. The biscuit was really thick, and not served split open. Plus, there was only a small layer of gravy (which was cold), so it didn’t balance very well in my opinion.
My cocktail was awesome, though. I’m definitely going back to try more of the stuff on their menu. Lots of things looked amazing. It’s very close to American food. Probably the best you can do in Glasgow. I’m especially looking forward to the tater tots. Wanna join me?
I also finished a couple of books recently. Highwire Moon by Susan Straight was beautifully written and had the most unsatisfying ending I can remember reading in a long time. Nonetheless, I’d recommend it. Particularly if you want to deepen your understanding and empathy regarding the current Mexican immigration issues.
I also managed to work my way through all 855 very big pages of The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft by Judika Illes. This book is an actual encyclopedia, and it’s got tons of great information. If you want to know more about the history and evolution of witchcraft, this is an excellent resource.
Summer internet food is often not my jam since it’s full of beautiful fresh fruits and vegetables, and I’m a monster who doesn’t like to eat those things. There have been some irresistible posts this month, though, that you simply must check out.
Tiegan from Half Baked Harvest made Browned Garlic Butter Creamed Corn Cheese Ravioli and it looks absolutely gorgeous. I need to eat this.
If you can still bear to turn on your oven, I recommend you make these Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cheesecake Bars from Lindsay at Pinch of Yum. They look ridiculous.
And if you can’t bear to turn on your oven, No-Churn Dulce de Leche Biscoff Ice Cream from Bake or Break is where it’s at. This reminds me of our trip to Belgium, and since we’re not travelling this summer, this ice cream will have to suffice.
August is going to be a heavy dose of reality with schools returning here in Glasgow, so that means I’m back to real work. Let’s do our best to keep each other safe, friends. I know you will.
