Bacon Mudslide Milkshake from Awesome on 20

Bacon Mudslide Milkshake

Bacon Mudslide Milkshake from Awesome on 20

I was very naughty this weekend. I spent four days worth of money on liquor and bacon. But I did it all for you so you could have this bacon mudslide milkshake.

I went to Costco and ended up coming home with a liter of Kahlua, a liter of Bailey’s, 1.75 liters of vodka, and four pounds of bacon. I’m telling myself that I just have to make it last. It’s an investment in my future. My very delicious and slightly tipsy future. So maybe if you buy all the booze all at once, it’s not that cheap, but if you consider how much it would cost to get a cocktail milkshake in a bar, well you’re really making your money stretch.

My husband asked a friend to bring him some bacon vodka back from the mainland. He was going through a serious bacon phase and thought it would be a great idea to have a bottle in the house. On it’s own, this particular bacon vodka was fairly awful, but mix it with something creamy and it’s pretty dang tasty.

Of course, you could just use regular vodka, and have regular mudslide milkshakes and it will still be awesome, but if you’ve somehow found yourself with a bottle of bacon vodka on your bar and you don’t know what to do with it, give this a try. It’s chocolaty, creamy, boozy, and potent. And so extremely fantastic when it seems like your living room might actually be the hottest place on Earth.

And guess what else! Tomorrow is chocolate milkshake day! You had no idea. I know. That’s what you keep me around for. Make sure you get yourself a boozy bacon mudslide milkshake to celebrate. I know things. You should trust me.

A Dozen Awesome Labor Day Party Recipes

A Dozen Awesome Labor Day Recipes

A Dozen Awesome Labor Day Party Recipes

I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t be more excited to be looking down the barrel of this long weekend. And I get a bonus fourth day off since I’ll be starting my new job on Wednesday!!!!! I can’t wait. I’ve got a little shopping planned, and I just found out we’re going to a bbq on the beach on Sunday.

I hope you have some relaxing with friends planned for this final hurrah of summer. For me, there’s really no point to a party if there’s not great food. Make any of these, and I’m pretty sure everyone will love you.

Awesome Party Snacks

Show up anywhere with a plate of jalapeno deviled eggs and you are instantly hip. Retro deliciousness!

You’ll have to race my husband to the bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers. He might not leave you any. We brought these to our last bbq on the beach. They didn’t last long.

I think this time it looks like we’re going to show up with sausage rolls. Who else will think to bring British food to such an American holiday?

Awesome Party Burgers

You have to have burgers at a bbq. Here’s a great basic burger recipe.

Or you can spice things up with Spicy Southwest Burgers. Get excited! We’ve made both of these at the beach. What else is there?

Awesome Party Salads

And I suppose you should serve something to go along side your burgers. That’s what grown ups do. Keep it traditional but fabulous with this dill potato salad.

Or if you’re diggin’ that spicy action, keep it hot with Southwest Pasta Salad. We make this for almost every picnic.

Passion Fruit Green Tea from Awesome on 20

It’s going to be hot so you’re going to need a giant jug of sweet tea. Make it tropical with passion fruit green tea. And spike it with vodka. It’s a holiday.

Awesome Party Desserts

Of course, if you want to be a real labor day hero, show up with a bottle of booze and dessert. Bring giant chocolate chip cookies and everybody will be your best friend.

Caramel swirl cheesecake bars travel well, and are pretty much heaven to eat.

If you love the summery citrusy flavor of lemon, and you want to show some extra love to your gluten-free friends, take along this lemon polenta cake. Not only does it taste amazing, but since it’s unfrosted, you don’t have to worry about anything melting.

And seriously, make someone’s day extra super awesome by making these orange cream cheese swirl brownies. I cannot urge you vehemently enough. Just do it. You can thank me later.

And if you are lucky enough to get Monday off from work, take a moment out of your feasting and relaxing to give thanks to all the people who fought so hard for things many of us take for granted, like a weekend. That hasn’t always been a thing. Even if you’re like me and you have a very unglamorous, low-paying job, you’re still much better off than workers a hundred years ago.  And if you’re interacting with someone who isn’t fortunate enough to get this holiday, for heaven’s sake, be extra nice to them. They’re serving you on a holiday. Make it as special for them as you can.

Happy feasting! Don’t forget to be awesome!

Passion Fruit Green Tea from Awesome on 20

Passion Fruit Green Tea

Passion Fruit Green Tea from Awesome on 20

In Taiwan, our very favorite drink was passion fruit green tea from a place we called 50 tea shop. There were four tea shops on just one side of the street on one single block in our neighborhood. We’d occasionally try the other ones, but the guys at 50 recognized the foreigners and usually knew what we wanted before we even made it to the counter. I needn’t have bothered learning how to say baixiang lucha. It’s one of the very few things I can actually say in Chinese. I was an abysmal expat.

Taiwan Tea

When lilikoi, or yellow passion fruit, started flooding our backyard, we knew we wanted to recreate our favorite drink from our former home. I came home from work one day to find that my husband had made a jug of lilikoi syrup. We went straight to the store to buy some green tea bags, brewed a cup each, impatiently waited for it to cool, dumped it over some ice and spiked it with the syrup. We were transported.

The lilikoi syrup could easily be mixed with plenty of other things. I’m sure a lilikoi margarita never hurt anyone. But a big pitcher of passion fruit green tea in your fridge when it’s 85 degrees in your living room really can’t be beat. It’s sweet but not too sugary. It also gives you a nice little hit of caffeine to help you through those hot afternoon slumps. It’s really the perfect drink.

Taiwan, US, UK, anywhere you can get your hands on some passion fruit, give this a try. And practice your Chinese. You can’t be any worse than me.

For syrup
  1. 2 cups passion fruit pulp
  2. 2 cups sugar
  3. 2 cups water
For green tea
  1. 1 green tea bag per cup of water
For syrup
  1. Put sugar and water in a medium sauce pan over medium high heat. Bring to a boil and lower heat. Simmer and stir until sugar is dissolved. This should only take a few minutes.
  2. Remove from heat.
  3. Add passion fruit pulp to simple syrup. Put a lid on the pot and leave it to steep for two hours.
  4. Strain out pulp and store in an air tight container or mix directly with tea.
For tea
  1. Boil some water and soak tea bags to desired strength. It's making tea, not rocket science.
  2. You can store the syrup in a separate container or combine it in a pitcher directly with the green tea. Fill up your desired container (short glass, tall glass, pitcher, bucket) with 3/4 green tea and 1/4 passion fruit syrup.
  3. Serve over ice.
