Cherry Orange Sangria is light and fruity, perfect for sipping on a hot summer night. Use fresh or frozen cherries and your favorite red wine to make a beautiful pitcher for your next party.

    Cherry Orange Sangria with text

As a witch, I love watching the seasons change. My heart always lightens when trees begin to burst with flowers in the spring. But that's also followed by a sense of sadness when those petals fall to the ground, leaving the trees looking bare. But of course, without the falling of the flowers, we'd never get to the sweet, juicy fruits of summer.

I had a cherry tree in the backyard of the first house I can remember living in as a child, and I played under it all the time. I can remember the sticky fruits falling to the ground and making a mess of the backyard. No matter how hard we tried to collect and eat them, nature was so prolific, so determined to survive, that there were still masses of cherries everywhere. I hope to thrive with such determination.

What makes Cherry Orange Sangria so awesome?

I'm not a big fan of red wine, unless it's full of fruit, flavored with liqueur, and possibly sweetened with some orange juice. I love the deep red color of this particular sangria and the way the orange slices become stained with wine. The cherries add an element of tartness that's just lovely.

Sangria is more a concept than a recipe, as far as I'm concerned. Feel free to add whatever fruits you happen to have, especially if they're falling on your head in your backyard. And I think the backyard is the perfect place to drink this. Get plenty of ice and a few friends, and sit outside and watch the fireflies play in the hedge as you sip and laugh. It'll be totally magical.

    Magical properties of wine

Wine has been enjoyed for centuries, and it has a number of deities, celebrations, and uses in religions and belief systems around the world. Naturally, it's significant in witchcraft and magical practices, as well. Wine is commonly associated with love and pleasure, as well as blood and vitality. Here are just a few ways to use it in your practice.

    • Drink elderberry wine to see fairies.
    • Boost your sex life by drinking wine infused with juniper berries.
    • Drink chrysanthemum wine to prolong life and maintain good health.
    • Make a variety of love potions.
    • Use as a symbol for blood in spellwork.
