Cider is usually my go to drink when I find myself in a pub here in Scotland. There are practical reasons for this choice, not least the fact that I detest beer. But there are also some romantically magical reasons as well. Apples are a powerful symbol of witchcraft (more on that later), and in late summer, there's just something so perfect about imagining the apple orchard, ripe wirh fresh fruit, giving us so much pleasure.

Another good practical reason for ordering a pint of cider is that it takes a long time for me to drink it. So that means more time with friends to sit and ponder life and enjoy each other's energy.
