Mint Cucumber Lemon Water with text

Not only are the weeks around Christmas and New Year lazy and indulgent for a lot of us, but this year, I've lost track of how many people got infected with Covid. It seems like every time you turn around, you're seeing someone else who has tested positive. Even those of us who got vaccinated, wore masks, and washed our hands relentlessly finally got hit. Thankfully, our cases weren't serious in this house, but it wasn't fun either.

I know I tend to use the holidays as an excuse to lay around for long periods and eat whatever I want, including obscene amounts of chocolate. There's absolutely no shame in that, but I do often feel the need for a bit of a rebalance in early January. Nothing crazy, just more attention to what I know my body needs, like a lot of water.

What makes Mint Cucumber Lemon Water so awesome?

I struggle to drink eight glasses of water a day at the best of times, but in the winter when it's cold and gloomy outside, it's even harder. I need to make it more appealing by making the water beautiful and tasty, and that's where something like this Mint Cucumber Lemon Water comes in. The water actually tastes interesting, and it looks lovely. I get excited to drink it.

I'm not a nutritionist, so I'm not about to claim that this will detox you or whatever. But I do know that staying hydrated has hugely positive benefits like making you more alert, improving your skin and hair, and generally keeping things flowing in your body. So make your water a little more awesome, and you'll be more likely to drink more of it.

    Magical properties of cucumber

Metaphysically, this recipe can provide some powerful energies. Ginger provides a bit of fire energy and invokes power and joy. Lemon is purifying and rejuvenating, and mint has healing properties. But we've never really talked about cucumber before. Let's see what it can do for us.

Despite their phallic shape, cucumbers actually have feminine energy, maybe because they're full of seeds. They're ruled by the element of water (no surprise) and the Moon as well as Venus. They're also associated with the sacral chakra. The cucumber's magical properties are perfect for this simple revitalizing potion. It's associated with beauty, fertility, healing, and youth. I think we'd all like to feel a bit more young and beautiful with this recipe. (Source: Plentiful Earth)

Tips for making Mint Cucumber Lemon Water

Okay, it's not as if you need a recipe to make infused water, but I do have a few tips. You'll want to thinly slice your lemon, ginger, and cucumber to expose a wider surface area for flavor extraction. Don't grate your ginger unless you want the bits floating around forever. No need to chop the mint, either. I just clipped a few stems off my mint plant.

Basically, you want everything to be big enough to strain out easily. Leave this to infused for about an hour. Anything beyond two hours tends to turn bitter. You can start drinking it immediately, but if your aim is to drink an entire eight cups in one day, you'll probably need more than two hours, so strain out your botanicals before things get gross. That would defeat the whole purpose.

Water is a powerful and sacred energy all its own, and our bodies rely on it for survival. Make it beautiful by mixing up some Mint Cucumber Lemon Water. It's a simple potion that will make you feel refreshed again.

    Ingredients

    Units Scale
    • 1 small cucumber
    • 1 lemon
    • 1 inch ginger, peeled
    • 1 bunch mint
    • 8 cups water
    • Ice, optional

    Instructions

    1. Thinly slice your cucumber, lemon, and ginger and add them to a large pitcher or other container. Toss in the mint. Add the water and ice, then put the whole thing in the fridge for up to two hours.
    2. The longer you infuse the water, the more flavorful it will be, but if you let it go too long, it can become bitter. Strain any remaining infused water into jars or bottles.
