    Herbs in Witchcraft - Cumin

Cumin is a fragrant spice that lends subtle flavor to our food, but it also has its own magical properties that can help us manifest our intentions and heighten our witchcraft spells.

The earthy aroma of ground cumin seeds is common on Latin, Middle Eastern and South Asian cuisine. Made from the seeds of the Cuminum cyminum plant, this herb likely originated in Central and Southwestern Asia and the Mediterranean. Evidence of cultivation goes back at least as far as the 6th millenium BCE. It's a pretty safe bet that anything that old played a role in magical practices. Let's get into it.

    Healing Properties of Cumin

For centuries, cumin has been a trusted ally in traditional medicine, especially for soothing the digestive system. It’s often used to ease bloating, calm gas, and gently support metabolism. Modern research now echoes this ancient wisdom. Studies suggest that cumin may be beneficial for those living with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Beyond digestion, cumin has long been turned to for respiratory health. Folk remedies include using it to ease coughs, soothe sore throats, and bring relief during times of seasonal illness.

Cumin is also naturally rich in iron, making it a valuable addition for supporting healthy blood and reducing the risk of anemia. Even a small sprinkle of cumin may contribute meaningfully to iron intake.

Traditionally, it has been regarded as a supportive herb for women’s health too, with some cultures using it to help stimulate menstruation and regulate cycles.

As with any herbal practice, it’s important to remember that plants are powerful medicine. Always consult with a qualified professional before beginning any herbal treatments.

Magical & Spiritual Properties of Cumin

The earthy aroma of cumin is powerful, and in our food, a little bit goes a long way. The same can be said for its magical powers.

Cumin can be used in spells for:

    • healing
    • protection
    • love
    • lust
    • breaking hexes
    • new beginnings
    • emotional strength
    • loyalty

Cumin is ruled by the element of fire, and the planet Saturn. This gives it bold but protective energy. Call on cumin to create strong feelings that will last a long time or to create strong bonds.

    Witchcraft Uses

As always, you're only limited by your imagination when it comes to using cumin in your witchcraft. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

    • Place cumin seeds at your door to absorb any unhelpful energy that passes through. Burn them regularly to release and transmute the negative energy.
    • Add this spice to an aphrodisiac spice blend to sprinkle on the food of a willing partner.
    • Add the seeds to a healing tea blend.
    • Add ground cumin to a home protection powder.
    • Add seeds to a charm bag or spell jar for a fresh start.
    • Add roughly ground seeds to a loose incense for protection or love.
    • Use the ground spice to dress a protection candle.

    Recipes for the Kitchen Witch

I absolutely love adding ground cumin to savoury dishes that need a deep, earthy flavor. I especially love it as part of a Tex Mex flavor profile, but it's found in cuisines around the world. From tacos to hummus to curry, there are plenty of ways to add cumin magick to your kitchen witchcraft.

Here are a few recipes that feature this sensual spice.

    • Homemade Spice Crackers
    • Black Bean & Chorizo Soup
    • Greek Meatballs
    • Southwest Chicken Burritos
    • BBQ Chicken Chili
    • Lahmacun
    • South Indian Vegetable Curry
    • Harissa Hummus
