This month for Herbs in Witchcraft, we're exploring the magical properties of figs. This plump and luscious fruit has its own distinct energy that will help you manifest a more sensual life.

Herbs in Witchcraft - Figs (with cut and whole figs)

Witches are not always very scientific about how we categorize the plant material we use in spells. We have a tendency to use herbs as a catch all term that includes fruits, bark, flowers, leaves, and any part of a plant. So we're looking at this luscious Mediterranean fruit this month to learn more about its magical and healing properties. Can figs make our lives more aweosme? Definitely yes!

    Healing Properties of Figs

Found widely in the cradle of civilization, figs have been eaten by humans for centuries and show up in folklore and art throughout history. They were particularly popular amongst Greek cultures. Athletes of ancient Sparta were believed to eat figs almost exclusively because they thought it would increase their strength and swiftness.

It's primary use in healing is as a laxative when combined with other herbs in a syrup. This is due to their high fiber content. The fiber also has a prebiotic element that promots gut health. Some preparations are said to be mild enough to use on children. As always, though, you should always consult a professional before consuming herbal remedies.

Figs are also rich in antioxidants and can support healthy blood pressure by increasing potassium. They're full of minerals such as calcium and magnesium, so they can help keep your bones healthy as well. Figs are a healthy, high fiber snack that brings sweetness along with lots of other helpful nutrients.

Magical & Spiritual Properties of Figs

In ancient Greece, figs were sacred to Bacchus and used in religious rites. The Romans believed fig trees were sacred because they shelted the wolf that suckled Romulus and Remus. They're also sacred to Dionysus, Isis, Juno, and Pan.

One look at a fig, and you know it's going to be useful in love, sex, and fertility spells. With its many seeds and its deeply feminine appearance, the ancients definitely associated it with birth. Of course, as modern witches, we can use fertility energy for a variety of purposes beyond procreation.

Because of the plentiful nature of the fruit as well, you can also use figs to call in abundance and luck.

Figs are ruled by the planet Jupiter, the element of fire, and the astrological sign of Sagitarius.

    Witchcraft Uses

Use your imagination when deciding how to work with figs. Whether you want to incorporate the fruit, the leaves, or other parts of the tree, you can still tap into the energy of this plant any way you like. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

    • Figs have long been used in divination. Use fig leaves to ask a question of the Universe, then observe how long it takes the leaf to wither. The longer it stays fresh and green, the better the outcome. You can write out a variety of options on different leaves to compare possibilities.
    • Fig wood can be used in spells to relieve impotency.
    • Add dried figs to a honey jar spell to attract a lover.
    • Leave fig wine or juice as an offering to your deity or ancestors.
    • Weave a crown or wreath of fig leaves to attract abundance.
    • Add dried figs to a spell jar or charm bag to increase your creative potential.

    Recipes for the Kitchen Witch

Obviously, just feeding figs to your lover would be a super sexy intimacy spell, but if you want to cook with them, there are lots of options. Sadly, they won't all come from me because, if you know me, you know I'm a weirdo who doesn't like fruit. I do, however, love fig jam and cheese.

Here are a few recipes to help you call in fig energy.

    • Add figs to an epic cheese board
    • Fig Jam, Crispy Prosciutto & Brie Grilled Cheese
    • Fig Jam & Smoked Gouda Grilled Cheese
    • Rose Fig Sangria
    • Easy Fig Compote

I hope this has inspired you to bring more fig magick into your life. How do you plan to use this sexy fruit in your witchcraft practice? Let me know in the comments below.
