Grounding is a foundational practice for beginner witches to connect with their energy and make other spells more powerful. I've got some simple techniques and tools to help you get grounded and make magick. Let's get into it.
Have you ever felt completely scattered? You've got ten million things on your mind and you're trying to be in five places at once and you just feel like your energy is totally out of your control. This is the perfect time for grounding.
Grounding helps us feel secure, rooted, and aware of our energy and our power. It connects us back to earth energy and helps us focus on what matters most. Grounding practices can be great for anxiety and focus. It's a great way to start any witchcraft ritual and will make your spellwork more powerful because your energy is grounded in the present moment.
What is grounding?
Grounding is a type of energy work that anchors you in the present moment. It often calls on support from the element of earth or the root chakra to create stability, strength and support. It can look like visualisation, deep breathing, physical contact with nature, or use of grounding materials like crystals and herbs.
As with all witchcraft, your intuitive assocation with what makes you feel grounded will always be the most effective spell for you. I've got some easy suggestions for beginner witches to try, but always stick with what works best and feels right to you. You want to create a feeling of safety and connection, so trust yourself as you grow your practice.
Earthing
Probably one of the most popular techniques for grounding is known as earthing. This is a simple practice of putting your barefeet in direct contact with the earth, whether that's grass, sand, dirt or stone. Skin to earth contact helps you to tap into the vibration of something solid, stable, and ancient.
All you have to do is take off your shoes and socks and plant your feet firmly on a natural surface. I'm not saying you can't do this indoors or on pavement, but you might find it more effective if you plant your feet on something that's not man made. Then close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Feel the energy of the Earth beneath you holding you and charging you. Draw the energy up through your feet, and send anything you no longer wish to hold out through your feet to be transmuted into something useful by the earth below. Stay connected to the earth until you feel strong and stable.
Candle Flame Focus Spell
Depending on where you live and the time of year, you may not be able to get outside and get your feet safely on the earth. This quick candle spell is perfect for a bit of indoor grounding. Personally, I always have a candle burning during all my spells and rituals. If you do the same, you can simply use this candle to help you get grounded before you begin your workings.
Simply light a candle of any color, then breathe deeply as you focus on the flame. Allow its steady warmth to feed you and bolster your energy. Continue to gaze into the flame, allowing the rest of the world to settle into silence. Picture all your scattered energy coming back to you, focusing it on the flame. Simply gaze and breathe until you feel calm and focused. Then you can proceed with your spell or ritual feeling supported by the energy of fire.
Salt Water Grounding Bowl
Salt is a wonderful way to connect with earth energy, and this is another one you can do indoors with ingredients you already have in your home. All you need is some salt, some water, and a bowl. Sea salt is great, but use whatever you've got. You could also use moon water or other charged water for this, but tap water is also fine.
Add your salt and water to the bowl and stir to dissolve the water. This will be easier if your water is warm. You're going to be using your hands, though, so not so hot it will burn you. The place your fingertips in the bowl of water, and allow it to absorb your scattered energy. Send all your stress and worries into the salt water, allowing it to hold your swirls thoughts. If any parts of your body or energy centers feel tense or buzzy or overstimulated, dab some of the salt water onto each body part with your fingertips.
Once you feel calm and connected, pour the water out onto the earth to fully release what the water was holding for you. Remember that salt water can stop plants from growing, so keep that in mind when you decide where to pour out your water. And if you don't have access to an outdoor space, you can always pour the water down the sink. Your intention makes the magick.
