    Herbs in Witchcraft: Carrots

We're talking about carrots in our herbs in witchcraft series this month. This delicious, vitamin-packed vegetable calls in the energy of fertility, passion, and clarity. What else can it do?

Carrots are one of the vegetables I actually enjoy eating. It's so easy to coax some sweetness out of them, it hardly feels healthy at all. They're also ubiquitous in the kitchen as one of the base flavors for soups, stews, and other one pot dishes. The humble carrot may be overlooked, but it can bring us so many benefits. Let's get into it.

    Healing properties of carrots

Carrots have a huge spectrum of vitamins and minerals. This root vegetable is believed to have properties that cleanse and balance the body. Raw grated carrot can be applied as a compress to soothe burns. Carrot seed tea may have benefits such as stimulating the appetite, aiding fluid retention and helping to alleviate menstrual cramps. A mixture of honey and carrot leaves has been used to cleanse sores. Chewing a raw carrot after eating is said to help clean the teeth and kill germs in the mouth.

One source suggests that carrot tea was used both to aid conception and as a contraceptive, so definitely seek further advice if you're pregnant or hoping to become pregnant.

Queen Anne's Lace, the flower of wild carrot, is considered toxic but was once also believed beneficial in curing epilepsy. Again, please consult a professional before consuming any foraged plants.

Carrot has been used for centuries to aid in healing a number of ailments from gas to anemia and was often recommended for sickly children. It was even prescribed for syphilis and dog bites in the middle ages. You better believe eating more carrots will help your body heal and maintain health.

    Magical properties of carrots

Carrot has long been used in love and lust spells. Culpepper believed carrots were ruled by Mercury, but other sources indicate passionate Mars as its ruler. No one will be surprised to learn this long root veg carries strong masculine energy and corresponds with the element of fire. All this lets us know it can be used to aid fertilty.

Carrots have also been long associated with improving eye sight, so perhaps that's why they're believed to bring clarity.

Carrot is also tied to the solar plexus, bringing high energy and creative flow. It can help you put projects into action while keeping you grounded.

    Witchcraft uses

Ancient Greeks created love spells with carrots that made men more passionate while encouraging women to be submissive. Apparently, Caligula served carrots at a feast in the hopes of inducing a "delightful orgy" for his viewing pleasure. These seem like terrible spells to me. Perhaps you may consider crafting your carrot spell in open and enthusiastic consent with your partner.
