You want your house to be your safe space, so I'm sharing a few simple home protection spells for beginners to make sure you feel energetically secure wherever you live.

Home protection spells for beginners with old house and tree

Protection magic is as old as civilization. Our homes are our safe space, our sanctuary from the harsh world outside, so naturally, we want them to feel secure. We lock our doors, close the curtains at night, and maybe even have an alarm. All of those things are great for stopping physical threats, but what about keeping out negative energy?

Whether you believe in the presence of harmful entities or misguided spirits, or you simply want to create a barrier from any negative energy emanating from the people in your neighborhood, a home protection spell is always a good option. These can also be made to look beautiful and add some charm to your home as well.

When to do a home protection spell

Before you do any home protection spells, I think it's always a good idea to start with energetic cleansing. Make sure you've cleared away any negative energy in your space before you create any type of barrier that would just keep that in place. Home protection spells allow you to set an intention for the energy you want in your home, so cleansing and protection go hand in hand.

You can refresh your home protection spells routinely, say at the full moon, at sabbats, or maybe even annually at Samhain for example. But you can also perform the spell or top up the spell whenever you feel the energy is off in your home. If things feel heavy or there's been a lot of tension amongst the people living there, it might be time to recharge your protection. If there's been an incident in your area, or if you just have a sense of feeling unsafe, it might be time for some protection magic.

So how can you protect your home energetically? Here are a few simple ideas to get you started. Remember, spellwork is limited only by your imagination, so use this as inspiration and find what works best for you.

    Create a crystal grid

If you're a crystal lover, this is ideal. Crystal grids can get very complicated, and lots of people will tell you lots of different things about how to do them, but we'll keep it simple. Choose protective crystals you feel drawn to, or use a clear quartz charged with your intention. Place them above or in front of all your doors and windows. You can also place them in the corners of your room if you just want to protect that one space. Then visualize all the crystals connecting together to form a web of protection. It's sort of like those laser alarms you see in heist films. If you feel the protection is starting to wane, cleanse and charge your crystals and reset them.

    Protective crystals

Here are a few ideas of crystals that will help protect your home.

    • Sardonyx - protects against crime
    • Fire opal - protects against danger
    • Selenite - protects the home from outside influences
    • Fire agate - protects against ill-wishes
    • Amber - absorbs negative energy and transmutes it into positive energy
    • Amethyst - protects against psychic attack and transmutes energy into love
    • Angelite - protection for the environment
    • Bloodstone - keeps out undesirable influences
    • Carnelian - protects against anger, rage, and resentment
    • Jade - protects from harm and brings harmony
    • Jet - protects from entities of darkness
    • Malachite - absorbs negative energies and pollutants easily
    • Obsidian - forms a shield against negative energy
    • Smoky Quartz - gently neutralizes negative vibrations
    • Tiger's eye - a talisman against ill wishing and curses
    • Turquoise - provides solace for the spirit; a traditional stone of protection

Remember that salt is a crystal as well and very effective for protection. If you don't want to spend money on crystals, place a small pinch of salt in the corners of your home, maybe in a little dish or bowl, and set the intention that they'll protect you from harm. You can replace the salt regularly to keep the protection at peak power.

    Herbal Protection Sprays and Powders

You can call on the protection of herbs and botanicals to protect your home in a variety of ways, incuding just by planting protect plants strategically around your home if you have a garden. If you're not much of a green witch, you can still use plant power for protection in the form of sprays and powders.

Combine essential oils in a spray bottle with water and a pinch of salt, and charge the mixture with the intention of energetic protection. Then spray this around home home whenever you feel bad vibes creeping in. It will banish the low energy and smell great as well. You can also use this in your office or pack it in your travel altar for some protection in your hotel room.

To make a protective herbal powder, simply add dried herbs and spices to a mortar and pestle and grind them together, charging them with your protective intention. You can then burn this mixture as loose incense on a charcoal disc or scatter it around your property. If you live in an apartment like me, you can simply scatter it in front of your door. If you have a house, consider sprinkling it around the border of your property. When using your powder outside, make sure you're not using anything that could be harmful to local wildlife.

    Protective herbs

Here are a few protective herbs to get you started. Remember, you can use them in their dry form or their essential oil form depending on what you have access to.

    • Basil
    • Bay leaf
    • Chia seeds
    • Chili peppers
    • Chives
    • Cinnamon
    • Cloves
    • Coconut
    • Coffee
    • Coriander
    • Cumin
    • Dill
    • Garlic
    • Ginger
    • Hazelnut
    • Lemon
    • Lemongrass
    • Lime
    • Marjoram
    • Mint
    • Mustard
    • Onion
    • Oregano
    • Parsley
    • Pine
    • Rice
    • Rosemary
    • Sassafras
    • Thyme
    • Turmeric

While not technically an herb, ground egg shells can also be added to home protection powders that will be scattered around your home.

    Door Guardians

Consider enchanting something to decorate the outside of your home with protective intentions. Whether it's a statue of a fierce lion, a scowling green man, or a wreath of protective plants, a simple door guardian is a great way to make your home feel magically protected.

Use your intuition here to craft something that feels protective to you. It could be something you find in a thrift shop (be sure to cleanse it first) or something you craft with your own hands. You can research traditions from your culture or just go with your gut. Remember, it's your intention that creates the magick, so simply hang or display something that you know is keeping you safe, even if it looks perfectly harmless to the delivery person.

You could also create a protective sigil and draw it on your door or create a craft to decorate your door that incorporates the sigil. Remember, a pentacle is a protective symbol that could be charged with this purpose, as well.

I hope this has given you some good ideas on where to get started when protecting your home from negative energy. I'd love to hear more ideas in the comments. And be sure to get in touch on Instagram with any questions. May your home be your blessed sanctuary.
