    Mint Simple Syrup with text

As much as I love working with fresh herbs in my cooking and my witchcraft, I'm actually terrible at keeping plants alive. I just don't have the drive to learn what it takes to care for them. So I remind myself that my talents lie elsewhere, but I still sorta wish I was a person who had a house full of living, breathing plants.

I did manage to keep a potted mint plant alive on my windowsill for about a year, and even though mint is notoriously hard to kill, I still felt pretty proud of myself. I loved having fresh, vibrant mint available to add to spells and recipes whenever I needed it. It's such a powerhouse in the metaphysical realm. But more on that later.

What makes this Mint Simple Syrup so awesome?

Mint is deeply magical, and it's also deeply delicious. But it can also be quite a strong flavor, so a little bit goes a long way when adding it to recipes. So if you're a person who has to buy their mint, like me, you often have some leftover. Enter Mint Simple Syrup. It's my favorite way to give my leftover mint leaves a flavorful purpose rather than letting them rot in my fridge.

As the name suggests, it's super simple to make with just sugar, water, and fresh mint leaves. And once you have a jar full, you'll want to add it to everything. Think minty cocktails, summery iced tea, or my new favorite, as a sweetener for hot green tea instead of honey. You could even drizzle it over ice cream or use it to make milkshakes. Toss it with some fresh fruit and yogurt for a delicious breakfast. There's an abundance of possibilities.

    Magical Properties of Mint

I said mint was a metaphysical powerhouse, and I wasn't kidding. It's probably best known for abundance and prosperity energy. As mint grows prolifically, it reminds us that, with a little tenacity and resilience, we can flourish as well.

It's got projective fire energy, and is ruled by the planet Mars, so you can call on it when you need to get stuff done to bring in that money. But it's also tied to air and Mercury, so you can use it in spells for decision making, clarity, and travel. Yet other sources tie mint to Venus and the heart and solar plexus chakra, so you can use it in spells for love, healing, joy, and success. There's not much this gorgeous herb can't do.

    Ingredients

Here's everything you'll need to make this syrup. The full details are in the recipe card below.

    • Sugar - caster or granulated sugar
    • Water
    • Fresh mint leaves - You could also make this with dried mint, but I prefer to make it as a way to use up leftover fresh leaves.

Tips for making Mint Simple Syrup

Okay, simple is in the name, so let's not overcomplicate things. All you have to do is stir together equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan and heat it gently until the sugar dissolves. Then turn off the heat, toss in your fresh mint leaves, and leave it to hang out for as little as 15 minutes or as much as a couple of hours. The longer you let it infuse, the strong your syrup will be. And if it ends up too strong, either use less or dillute it with a bit more water. Then all you have to do is strain it into a container, and pour it into anything you want to add some minty sweetness to.

This syrup does not keep indefinitely, especially when made at home and stored in unsterilized containers, so I prefer to make it in small batches so I can use it up before it goes off. However, if you know you'll use a lot of it, you can make this in whatever quantity you desire.

How long will mint simple syrup keep?

Your mint simple syrup can be kept in the fridge for 2-3 weeks in a sealed jar. If it goes cloudy, I'd throw it out and make a new batch.

So, what are you going to do with your Mint Simple Syrup? Remember that everything you add it to becomes a spell for love, abundance, and success, so drizzle it everywhere.
