Moons Over My Hammy with text

Why do we have this strange distinction between breakfast foods and what you're allowed to eat the rest of the day? If something tastes good, surely it's delicious all day. When you look at a giant plate of steak and eggs with home fries, you can't argue that it's because breakfast food is meant to be lighter. So who made up these rules?

When I lived in Taiwan, I loved to stop by McDonald's on my way to work in the winter. I'd get a sausage mcmuffin and a bowl of corn soup. It was exactly what I needed to warm me up and keep me going in the morning. And I'll have breakfast for dinner every chance I get. So maybe it's time to defy those breakfast food rules and start eating whatever we want whenever we want.

What makes a Homemade Moons Over My Hammy so awesome?

A homemade Moons Over My Hammy is just what we need to start this good food all day revolution. If you've never been to Denny's, this is a grilled ham and cheese sandwich with scrambled eggs. At this ubiquitous diner, you can get it served with hash browns or French fries, proving that it's awesome at all hours of the day.

With two kinds of cheese, deli ham, and tender scrambled eggs, this sandwich is full of flavor. I also love the crunch of the grilled sourdough bread along with the gooey cheese. It can get a bit messy, but it's worth it. Every bite is absolutely delicious.

    Magical Properties of Bread

While the ingredients of bread each have their own metaphysical properties, bread itself has spiritual significance. It's certainly and ancient staple food, but today, most of us rely on factories or professional bakers to prepare our bread for us.

Bread is a common offering for a variety of spirits and deities. Other materials can also be baked into bread and served to the target of the spell. Bread can bring earthy, grounding energy to any spell. (Source: Element Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells by Judika Illes)

Tips for making Moons Over My Hammy

This is mainly assembly, but we do need to scramble eggs before we can make a sandwich. Depending on how averse you are to washing dishes, you can use two skillets or clean out the skillet after you make the eggs to use it again to grill your sandwich. Either way, you'll be cleaning a skillet twice.

Get all your ingredients ready to assemble. Put your skillet over low heat and lay your ham slices in there to heat up and get a bit of color on them. A couple minutes per side is fine.

You can crack and whisk your eggs while this is going on. Add salt and pepper to your beaten eggs, then add them to your hot skillet once the ham is out of the way. Use a spatula to keep them moving as they cook. Take the eggs off the heat while they still look a bit damp or else they'll end up overcooked by the time you eat them.

To assemble your sandwich, butter the outside of the bread, then add one type of cheese, followed by the ham, then the eggs, then the other type of cheese and the top piece of bread. Grill your sandwich in your skillet over medium heat until the bread is crunchy and the cheese is melty. Serve this piping hot, maybe with home fries.

    • Total Time: 30 minutes
    • Yield: 1 sandwich 1x
    • Category: Breakfast
    • Method: Stovetop
    • Cuisine: American

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 2-4 slices deli ham
    • 2 eggs
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • 2 slices sourdough bread
    • ½ tablespoon softened butter
    • 1 slice Swiss cheese
    • 1 slice American cheese

    Instructions

    1. Place a nonstick skillet over medium heat and cook your ham for about two minutes per side. Remove to a separate plate.
    2. In a mixing bowl, whisk your eggs together and add salt and pepper to taste. In the same pan as you cooked the ham, scramble your eggs, stirring gently the whole time until just set. Remove from heat or transfer to the plate with the ham.
    3. Butter your slices of bread, then place one slice butter side down in a clean skillet (it can be the one you cooked the eggs in, but rinse out any egg remnants) over medium heat. Then add one slice of cheese, then the ham, then your scrambled eggs, and finally the other piece of cheese. Then top it with your other piece of bread, butter side out. Cook for 3-5 minutes until your bread is golden and crunchy. Turn your sandwich over and cook the other side for another 3-5 minutes.
    4. Serve hot any time of day.
