These Nutella Cupcakes have a deep, dark chocolate hazelnut flavor. Moist cupcakes with a tender crumb get topped with a billow of Nutella Buttercream Frosting for a truly delightful treat.
It's a good thing Nutella wasn't really well known in the US when I was a kid. My peanut butter addiction was bad enough. Can you imagine what it would have been like in the 80s if it was socially acceptable to bring chocolate hazelnut sandwiches to school in our little metal Strawberry Shortcake lunchboxes? I'm glad I didn't discover Nutella until I developed a bit of self-control.
As much as I love to just stick a spoon in the jar, chocolate hazelnut spread is a terrific ingredient as well. It just turns anything chocolaty into something a little bit more special. It somehow deepens the flavor. The word that always comes to my mind is dark. It's got a very intense Scorpio energy to it somehow. And hazelnuts also bring wisdom, so you can just tell yourself that you're getting smarter while you enjoy it.
What makes these Nutella Cupcakes so awesome?
These Nutella Cupcakes have chocolate hazelnut spread in the cupcake batter itself, adding that characteristic intensity to the flavor. The cupcakes themselves are fluffy and moist with a tender crumb. There everything you'd want a chocolate cupcake to be and then some.
I've topped these with a big swirl of Nutella Buttercream Frosting and some chopped hazelnuts. You could opt for a different flavor of frosting, swap the nuts for sprinkles, whatever you like. These are awesome for a birthday party, baby shower, slumber party, Friday night. Really, any excuse you can think of, whip these babies up. You're gonna love them.
Make it magical
I've written quite a lot recently about the magical properties of hazelnut and chocolate. You can find all the details on the Kitchen Magick page. I would love for you to explore the magic of treating yourself to a pure moment of pleasure. Cupcakes are fun and beautiful and absolutely delicious. Nobody is ever going to try to convince you of their nutritional value. We eat them simply for the bliss. So the next time you peel the paper on a cupcake, give yourself a mindful moment to really tune in let yourself enjoy every bite. The smell, the flavor, the texture, the color. Let the whole experience flood your senses with joy. Your vibe will be soaring when you simply give in to the pleasure.

- Chocolate hazelnut spread - Nutella or your favorite brand
- Flour - all-purpose and some cake flour if you have it, if not, just use all AP flour

- Eggs
- Sugar
- Butter - unsalted, softened
- Buttermilk - or kefir
Tips for making Nutella Cupcakes
This recipe originates with Good Life Eats, and the method is a bit unusual, but I liked the results. You start by mixing eggs and sugar, then add the butter and mix until combined. You'll definitely want to use an electric mixer for this. Then you'll add in the buttermilk and Nutella before mixing in the dry ingredients. You'll just want to make sure each stage is fully incorporated before you add the rest of the ingredients.
Divide your cupcake batter evenly, filling about halfway. These will rise quite high. Be sure to let them cool completely before frosting and decorating.
It cannot be denied. Nutella Cupcakes are totally awesome! Give them a try and see if you can prove me wrong.
