If you're a peanut butter fanatic like me, then this Peanut Butter Ice Cream is going to be your new favorite. It's smooth and creamy and intensely flavored. I can't get enough.
It's not really that much of an exaggeration to say that peanut butter has probably saved my life. If you think I'm a picky eater now, you should have tried to feed me as a child. There were very few things I would eat, but I'd always go for a peanut butter sandwich. I mean, I wouldn't eat the crust, but at least it was something.
I'm sure I was a nightmare to travel with. I can remember spending two weeks in Hawaii with my grandmother when I was maybe 10 years old. She always kept peanut butter and a loaf of bread in the hotel room because she knew that if I wouldn't eat whatever was on offer, she could always feed me peanut butter, and at least I wouldn't die. To this day, I eat peanut butter several times a week. It's an absolute fixture in my kitchen.
What makes Peanut Butter Ice Cream so awesome?
I also love to eat ice cream year 'round, and up until I made this recipe, I would have said that Ben & Jerry's peanut butter cup ice cream was my favorite. I'm gonna go on record as saying that this homemade peanut butter ice cream is even better. It's all peanut butter all the time, and I freakin' love it.
There's peanut butter mixed right into the ice cream base, plus a swirl of pure, unadulterated peanut butter running throughout. I was worried that ice cream would be a bit grainy, but ti came out perfectly smooth and creamy. I was so sad when this was gone. Part of me wanted to stick my head right in the container and lick out every last drop.
This peanut butter ice cream is absolutely wonderful all on its own, but it would also be great with hot fudge or even raspberry sauce for a bit of PB&J action.
Magical Properties of Peanut Butter
Because peanuts grow underground, they obviously have an earthy, grounding quality. And because peanut butter itself is quite sticky, you can use it on spells to keep things stuck together. This abundant little legume can also be used for wealth and prosperity spells, as well as creating new opportunities. Personally, I would also use it to connect to my inner child. Try carving a sigil into the peanut butter you spread on your toast to heighten the energy of your breakfast.

Ingredients
Here's everything you'll need to make this dish. The full details are in the recipe card below.
- Cream - double or heavy cream
- Milk - be sure to use whole milk to avoid icy ice cream
- Eggs
- Sugar
- Peanut butter - I use the sugar American stuff, like Skippy or Jif. You could certainly try this with a more natural peanut butter. Definitely use smooth peanut butter for the ice cream base, but if you want to use chunky for the swirl, go for it. The point is, use your favorite.
Tips for making Peanut Butter Ice Cream
Making homemade ice cream is simple but time consuming. Oh, and it's fairly messy as well. But the result is well worth the effort as it usually exceeds even the best quality store bought stuff.
This recipe starts with my homemade vanilla ice cream base. You'll start by heating milk, cream, and peanut butter in a sauce pan until it gets steamy and you see the first hint of bubbles.
In another bowl, you'll whisk together your eggs and sugar until they're light and pale. Then slowly whisk in some of the hot cream mixture, drizzling in a quarter cup at a time. This slowly raises the temperature of the eggs so that they don't scramble. Once you've got about half the cream mixed in, it's safe to add the whole thing back to the pot, and heat it up, stirring frequently, until it begins to thicken.
I like to strain this mixture to catch any clumps of cream or cooked egg bits, then let the whole thing cool to room temp then chill in the fridge until it's cold all the way through. Then you'll churn it in your ice cream machine.
While your ice cream is churning, heat up some peanut butter in the microwave to get it to a pourable consistency, then give it a few minutes to cool back down some. As you're transfering your ice cream to it's freezable container, drizzle some of this melted peanut butter into the mix. Use a chopstick or skewer to swirl the melted peanut butter throughout, then stash the whole thing in the fridge to freeze thoroughly.
Scoop it up in a bowl, on a cone, or as part of an awesome sundae.
If you can't live without peanut butter, then don't go another day without trying this Peanut Butter Ice Cream. It's absolutely awesome.

- Prep Time: 20

- Total Time: 35 minutes
- Yield: 8 servings 1x
- Category: Dessert
- Method: Stovetop
- Cuisine: American
- Diet: Vegetarian
Ingredients
- 2 cups double cream or heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 eggs
- ¾ cup sugar
- 1 cup smooth peanut butter, divided
Instructions
- Add your cream, milk, and ½ cup peanut butter to a medium sauce pan over low heat and heat this up, stirring to incorporate the peanut butter as it melts, until you just start to see hints of bubbles around the edge.
- While your dairy is heating up, whisk your eggs in a mixing bowl for a few minutes until light and fluffy. Slowly whisk in the sugar until it's pale yellow.
- Once your cream is hot, remove it from the heat. Temper your egg mixture by slowly drizzling in some of your hot milk into the eggs while whisking the whole time. Drizzle in about a quarter cup at a time until you've mixed in at least half of your dairy. This will raise the heat on your eggs slowly so they don't start to scramble.
- Now you can safely add your egg mixture back into the pan, then place the whole thing over medium low heat. Attach your candy thermometer to the side of your pan, and heat this mixture, stirring frequently, until it reaches 170F (75C). Remove from heat.
- To make sure we don't have any coagulated egg or weird chunks of fat from the cream ruining our perfectly smooth ice cream, pour your ice cream mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a mixing bowl. Cover this mixture with plastic wrap. Press it right down onto the surface of the mixture to prevent a skin from forming. Allow this to cool on the counter until it reaches room temperature.
- Put your ice cream base in the fridge for at least an hour to chill. Over night is fine.
- Add this mixture to your ice cream maker and follow your manufacturer's instructions. I churn mine for about 25 minutes.
- While your ice cream is churning, heat up your remaining ½ cup peanut butter in the microwave in 30 intervals, stirring after each, until you've got a pourable consistency. Let this cool while your ice cream finishes churning.
- As you transfer your ice cream to it's container, drizzle in some of the melted peanut butter in layers. Once everything's added, use a chopstick or a long skewer to swirl the melted peanut butter throughout.
- Cover your container and freeze your ice cream for at least 8 hours before serving.
Notes
Don't forget to check the instructions on your ice cream maker to ensure that any parts that need to be frozen are taken care of.
