As we step into October and tip inevitably toward the dark half of the year, the light of summer fades, and the beauty of the dark goddesses surrounds us. I often suspect that one of the main differences between people who are drawn to witchcraft and those who are drawn to new age spirituality in general is the witch's fascination with darkness.
This is not the same as evil. That's not what I mean at all. But witch's seem to have a deep understanding that death and decay are part of life, that what seems ugly can often be beautiful, and that our shadow sides deserve love just as much as our lighter sides. Witches understand the duality of all things and the nuance between the poles. We embrace the darkness because we know there's nothing to fear. The light will always return.
What makes a Pomegranate Mimosa so awesome?
I made a Pomegranate Mimosa to honor Persephone, Queen of the Underworld. It was by eating pomegranate seeds that she became bound to the underworld, so I thought it was the perfect drink to take us into the dark half of the year. A simple combination of pomegranate juice and sparkling wine, this drink is lightly sweet and totally refreshing. And that color! It's simply gorgeous.
Of course, you could serve this for any winter holiday as well. It doesn't just have to be for coven gatherings, although that would obviously be the most awesome. You can make these one glass at a time or by the pitcher if you're serving a crowd. It would also be a delicious drink for date night and a little love magic. Freeze the pomegranate seeds to keep your drink chilled if you like.
Magical Properties of Pomegranate
Pomegranates are, of course, associated with Persephone, but they've been eaten for centuries, so they have many mythological and magical associations. It's, of course, tied to the duality of life and death, but it shows duality in other areas as well. It's corresponded to the elements of air and fire as well as the planets Saturn and Venus, showing it's metaphysical range.
