    Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

This classic Purple Rain Cocktail has a gorgeous color, just a few simple ingredients, and a sweet and boozy flavor that will make any party a bit more awesome.

    Purple Rain Cocktail with text

As a little girl, I had lots of pink things, but from my pre-teen years onward, I became strictly a purple girl. From the time I started to develop a bit of intellectual autonomy, I (obnoxiously) decided that pink was too common, and I wanted to be unique, so naturally, my favorite color had to be purple. It was the color of royalty. It had mystical overtones. Purple was still feminine and beautiful, but much more rare.

Now that I'm middle aged, my obsession with purple and with being unique haven't lifted. Everything from my branding to my hair is purple, and as I've begun to learn more about the magic of color, I can see how this deeply aligns with my values and my energy. No offense to everyone who's pretty in pink, but it's just not my vibe. I'm team purple for life.

What makes a Purple Rain Cocktail so awesome?

So a purple cocktail is obviously right up my street. A Purple Rain Cocktail isn't exactly sophisticated. In fact, it's the kind of drink you might buy by the pitcher at the pub when you're in college. It's definitely on the sweet side, but that doesn't bother me at all. It's gorgeous deep color is made by combining blue curacao and cranberry juice. A shot of vodka makes the drink more potent.

This drink is definitely a bit of a party vibe. If you're headed out for a night on the town or you just want to imbibe with friends and have your own living room disco, this drink is fun, easy, and absolutely beautiful. So raise a glass to being totally unique and totally awesome. You'll be knocking them back all night.

    Make it magical

The magick of color is actually used all the time, most commonly in advertising. But you'll know from your own experience that certain colors affect your energy in different ways. Purple brings wisdom, spirituality, and connection to the higher realms. Often associated with the third eye and crown chakras or energy centers, this far end of the light spectrum connects us to the mystical and the unseen. As it was also once very expensive to create as a dye, it's associated with royalty and wealth. Use purple in spells to strengthen your psychic abilities and intuitive powers.

    Ingredients

Here's everything you'll need to make this drink. The full details are in the recipe card below.

    • Vodka - The other flavors here are strong enough to use the cheap stuff
    • Blue Curacao - This is what creates the purple hue when mixed with the red juice
    • Cranberry juice - You could substitute pomegranate juice if you like that better.

If you want to make this without alcohol, use a non-alcoholic blue curacao coffee syrup and substitute the vodka with soda water for a fizzy version.

Tips for making a Purple Rain Cocktail

This is ridiculously easy. The alchemy comes in getting the color just the way you like. You'll start by mixing equal parts vodka, blue curacao, and cranberry juice, but you can mess around with the ratios a little bit to get the exact hue of purple that you're looking for. This is going to give you a deep purple, almost indigo color, so don't go trying to a pale amethyst.

You can just as easily mix one drink as ten, so if you're making this for a crowd, mix up a whole pitcher of cocktails and then let your friends pour their own drinks over ice whenever they're ready. No technique required. Just pour, stir, and sip.

Purple is queen, and a Purple Rain Cocktail will make you feel awesome. And by the way, if you feel the need to blast Prince at top volume, just follow your intuition. It's never a bad idea.
