No matter what the weather is doing, a Dark & Stormy Cocktail is always awesome. Made with dark spiced rum, ginger beer, and a dash of lime, this simple cocktail is a mood. Get into it.

Dark & Stormy Cocktail with text

I grew up in an arid landscape where rain was a rare occurence and dry lightning was much more common. I was used to seeing brush fires and dust storms, but a deluge of rain happened rarely. When I moved to Oklahoma to go to college, I learned how powerful the weather could truly be. The first time I experienced a big Midwestern thunderstorm, it filled me with wonder and power. If only I had known I was a witch back then.

I'm not a storm witch myself, but I imagine they must be able to hold massive amounts of power in order to be able to channel the energy of the volatie wind and rain. It's a lot to take on all at once, and bottling up that energy for future use is such a smart idea. As a kitchen witch, I can search for other ways to evoke the magick of a dark and stormy night.

What makes this Dark & Stormy Cocktail so awesome?

A Dark & Stormy Cocktail is a simple mix of dark rum and ginger beer. I like to use spiced rum in mine because it holds extra power and extra flavor. There's also a squeeze of fresh lime juice to infuse your drink with some cleansing, abundant energy. Ginger is fiery, and rum in this drink evokes the powerful storms of the Carribean. It's ideal for spellcrafting.

Of course, you could also sip this drink to relax in the evening, mix it up for a date night, or serve it to friends at a party. How much magick you infuse your drink with is totally up to you. It's just as easy to make a big pitcher as it is to make a single drink, so it's great for a gathering. The ginger will give a boost of energy to your guests while the booze will mellow them out. Sounds like a great party to me.

    Magical Properties of Rum

Rum is commonly used as a libation and offering in magical practices of the Afro Carribean diaspora. This spirit distilled from sugar cane can be used in witchcraft to help sweeten the deal and win someone's favor. You can also add it to spells for protection and neutralizing negative energy. Ingredients

Here's everything you'll need to make this drink. The full details are in the recipe card below.

    • Spiced rum - Use your favorite brand or substitute dark rum if spice is not your jam
    • Ginger beer - non-alcoholic
    • Lime juice - Fresh limes are best, but you can use bottled lime juice in a pinch
    • Ice - and plenty of it

You won't need any special equipment for this. Just a vessel to sip your drink from, some measuring devices (if you don't want to eyeball it) and a knife to slice a lime.

Tips for making a Dark & Stormy Cocktail

This is a really simple drink, so the quality of your ingredients will be key. I do like to use fresh limes here, both as a flavor and as a garnish. Choose a rum that you really enjoy and a ginger beer that you would drink on its own. Beyond that, all you have to do is stir and sip.

If you start with your ingredients already chilled, it will take longer for your drink to get watered down by the ice. But I also know fridge space is limited, so it's not crucial.

Rain or shine, I hope you enjoy this Dark & Stormy Cocktail. Let the power flow through you. It's gonna be awesome.
