You may most closely associate tomatoes with Italian cuisine, but did you know that these juicy, jewel-bright fruits are actually a new world food? So how did tomatoes make it around the world and become so beloved in the kitchen, especially considering they come from potentially poisonous ancestry? Let's dig in to all the ways tomatoes can nourish us both physically and spiritually.

    Healing Properties of Tomatoes

For a long time, tomatoes, especially the leaves, were considered to be poisonous. They are part of the nightshade family and are cousins to baneful plants like henbane. But today they're one of the most commonly eaten types of fresh produce in America.

Tomatoes are easy to access and consume in abundance, which is great because they're full of healthy qualities. They can inhibit certain types of cancer, lower blood-pressure and cholesterol, and carry antibacterial, antivital, and anti-inflammatory properties. The lycopenes in this fruit may also lower the chances of stroke.

Tomatoes also contain beta-carotene which is great for your skin and can reduce UV damage. They were once used in folk medicine as an ingredient for a salve to treat sunburns. They also improve vision and bone health and help regulate blood sugar.

Magical & Spiritual Properties of Tomatoes

Once known as love apples, tomatoes are probably best known for their aphrodisiac properties. As they're ruled by Venus and tied to other love goddesses such as Aphrodite and Hera, you can incorporate these red beauties into spells for love, lust, and seduction. Pair them with garlic for extra sexy power. They carry feminine or receptive energy, so the love spells you work with tomatoes with have a softer, more romantic vibe to them.
