    Herbs in Witchcraft - Vanilla

Vanilla is a deeply evocative scent, and anything that makes you feel a deep emotion is powerfully magical. Our herbs in witchcraft post this month is anything but plain.

Herbs in Witchcraft - Vanilla with vanilla beans and an orchid on a wooden table

Did you know that vanilla actually comes from an orchid? One of the most ubiquitous flavors in the Western kitchen is actually derived from a tropical flower that must be hand pollinated, making it the second most expensive spice in the world, after saffron. It's primarily grown in Mexico, Madagascar, and Tahiti, and this is a spice with a dark colonial history.

Yet somehow, vanilla has become synonymous with plain or boring. I can't help but think that those people have never tasted or smelled true vanilla, which is heady and complex. It's one of my very favorite scents and flavors. Let's look at how it can be used to hea us physically and spiritually.

    Healing Properties of Vanilla

Given that it's an exotic and difficult to obtain spice, there aren't many studies on the healing properties of vanilla, though some of its compounds are well known. Vanillin is the most well known compound in vanilla pods, and can also be found in other plants. It contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It's unlikely you'd derive much benefit, though, in the quantities in most vanilla flavored foods.

Adding vanilla to foods and drinks enhances the natural sweetness, which means less added sugar is needed.

Vanilla was commonly used for its stimulating properties by early 20th century herbalists. Today it's called upon to sharpen the mind and strengthen memory. It can also help relieve the digestive system. Though it can be stimuating, it can also be deeply relaxing. Vanilla tea can bring a sense of calm and euphoria. It's also known as an aphrodisiac.

As always, consult a medical professional before using any herbs for physical healing purposes.

Magical & Spiritual Properties of Vanilla

When considering how to use vanilla in your magical practice, I think it's more important than ever to consider your personal associations with it. If it primarily reminds you of baking cookies with grandma, you probably won't want to use it in love and lust spells. Remember, your intuitive association is always going to be most powerful.

Vanilla can be used to call in peace, contentment, happiness, and restoration. It can also be used in spells to attract love and romance.

Vanilla has distinctly feminine vibes. It's ruled by the element of water and the planet Venus.

    Witchcraft Uses

Burn a whole vanilla bean as incense to attract a romantic partner.

Bathe in vanilla scented water to heighten your seductive powers.

Steep vanilla beans and other aphrodisiac spices in red wind for a powerful love spell.

Stir vanilla sugar into your coffee for a boost of happiness. Add vanilla to a tea blend for calm and contentment.

Add chopped vanilla pods to charm bags or spell jars.

Vanilla extract is a common ingredient in almost every sweet baking recipe, from cookies to cake and beyond. However, it's a fabulous flavor in its own right and deserves to be celebrated. With all that we've learned about the happy, sensual vibes this spice can create, why wouldn't you want to eat it? Here are a few vanilla forward recipes to get you started.
