Wondering what to eat for the snow moon? I've got 100 awesome seasonal recipes to see you through the tumultuous days of February and comfort you through the storms.
February can be such a tumultuous time, with storms, freezing temperatures, and hints of warming sunshine all at once, sometimes all in the same day. The Snow Moon arrives in late winter when the Earth can still be buried beneath a layer of ice.
In a pre-industrial world, our ancestors would have been deeply tested by season. With their Autumn stores dwindling, fasting became a part of multiple cultures. There's a reason that Lent falls at this time of year, and the Baha'i faith engages in a period of fasting in the days leading up to Naw Ruz as well.
Spiritual Meaning of the Snow Moon
As modern witches, we have access to as much food as we like, but that doesn't mean our bodies don't still hold onto ancient rhythms. When snow covers the earth, it's is an invitation to pause and reflect. The hush that falls over the land can be an internal one, where you intentionally allow yourself time and space for reflection.
With this full moon falling in Virgo, it can also be a good time for a bit of decluttering, whether that's of your home or of your mind. Use the waning moon as a time to get rid of anything that's not serving you so that you have plenty of space for new growth when spring arrives.
What's in season at the Snow Moon
In February, the Earth is just starting to show small signs of reawakening, but not enough to really provide a fertile feast. With Imbolc earlier in the month, we know that milk, especially from sheep, may have been plentiful to our ancestors. Preserved foods would also have been common, as well as root vegetables, or fruits brought in from sunnier climes.
Or course, what's in season varies by region. If you'd like to eat more seasonally around the Snow Moon, focus on these ingredients.
