Ham & Swiss Sliders with text

I grew up in the USA, but I've now lived in Scotland for seven years. I've learned witchcraft in this country where many of the modern witch traditions had their origins. I've embraced the rhythm of the seasons and many of the local traditions. Except I don't quite get the way they do sports here.

There's plenty of beer, but no food. Because every single town has its own professional football team, lots of people actually go to the games. There's not the tradition of gathering in a friend's home to watch the game on TV and eat really good comfort food. Maybe it's because I wasn't as invested in the sports that I notice and miss the food. I just think any excuse to get people into your house and feed them is good, so I wish there was more game day feasting here.

What makes Ham & Swiss Sliders so awesome?

If I was having a game day feast, I'd definitely make Ham & Swiss Sliders. First off, they're delicious, but second, they're super easy to make. You bake all the sandwiches as one. They get all warm and gooey in the oven, and your bread goes a bit crisp on the top and bottom while staying soft in the center. It's delish.

You could do a couple of trays of these to feed a crowd, or bake these off and serve them with a cup of soup after a day of apple picking or a trip to the pumpkin patch. They're obviously also perfect for eating with one hand in front of the TV while you cheer your team on to victory in the big game. A fan needs fuel, too.

    Make it magical

Sometimes with kitchen magick, it doesn't matter what you make but how you make it. Even a simple recipe like this can be created with intention, and that energy can be shared with the people who eat it. This recipe is obviously meant to feed a group of people, so you could create these sliders with the intention of unity or harmony. One of the challenges is keeping all the rolls stuck together in one piece while you build your sandwich, so maybe you can visualize your family or friends sticking together and being united like the rolls.

Get creative with your kitchen magick and bring the symbolism of your cooking process into your craft. For details on the magical properties of some of the ingredients in this recipe, check the Kitchen Magick page.

Tips for making Ham & Cheese Sliders

These are brilliantly simple to make. If you can get Hawaiian rolls, you should definitely use those. They're not available here, so I worked with the smallest rolls I could find. What makes these so easy is that you slice the entire pack of rolls in half to open it up like a book. Smear each side with a spicy mayo mixture, then layer on your ham and swiss cheese, put the lid back on, and bake them all at once. So easy.

Before they go in the oven, you'll want to wrap them in foil which will keep your bread from drying out and help to create gooey cheese. If you're serving these to kids, you could leave out the cayenne, but they're not that spicy. It's just enough to make it interesting.

Can you make your sliders ahead of time?

You could make up your sandwiches a few hours ahead and keep them wrapped in foil in the fridge before baking. You will need to keep them in the oven a few minutes longer if they're cold when they go in, though.

    • Category: Appetizer
    • Method: Baked
    • Cuisine: American

    Ingredients

    Units Scale
    • 1 package of a dozen Hawaiian rolls (or the smallest rolls you can find)
    • ⅓ cup mayonnaise
    • ⅓ cup Dijon mustard
    • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
    • 8 slices honey ham
    • 6 slices Swiss cheese

    Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 350 F (175 C) and line a 13x9 baking pan with foil.
    2. Remove your rolls from the package, but don't separate them. Using a long, serrated knife, slice all the way through your rolls. Remove the top half all in one piece. Put the bottom half in the baking pan, and turn the top half inside up on the cutting board.
    3. In a small bowl, stir together mayo, mustard, and cayenne pepper. Spread this mixture onto both sides of your rolls. Be sure to spread all the way to the edges.
    4. Layer ham, then cheese onto the bottom half of your rolls, then place the top half of your rolls back on top of your sandwich.
    5. Cover the pan with foil and put it in the oven for about 20 minutes. You want everything to be warm and melty. The bread will be slightly browned and crisp on the top and bottom and squishy in the middle. Cut your sandwiches into twelve, and serve hot.
