Harissa Hummus is about to become your snack of the summer. It's fruity with just a touch of heat. Harissa paste is the perfect accompaniment to your favorite chickpea dip. It's gonna be awesome.
I'm a food enthusiast who loves to travel. I love learning about foods and cultures from around the world, and I get excited to explore new flavors in new places. But I'm also a picky eater with anxiety, so it doesn't always work out the way I'd hoped. Sometimes I get scared and end up going back to what I know. It's baby steps for people like me.
Harissa paste was something I was almost certain I'd like, though. Though I haven't been to North Africa yet, it's available in most grocery stores these days, though I obviously can't attest to its authenticity. This hot chili pepper paste is made with various herbs and spices, but always contains lots of red peppers. How could that possibly taste bad? News flash, it tastes amazing.
What makes Harissa Hummus so awesome?
I was also pleased to discover that harissa is the perfect accompaniment to hummus, which I could easily eat once a week. I'm sure there's a bit of variation from brand to brand, but the harissa I bought was fairly mild, quite fruity, and almost smoky. When mixed in to bright hummus, it just added to the depth of flavor. And that color is just gorgeous.
You can dip just about anything in hummus. My go to is usually tortilla chips or soft flat bread or pita. You could also go a healthier route with carrots, or here I think slices of red bell pepper would be especially awesome. I think you're gonna want to make a double batch of this, kids. You're gonna want to eat this all summer when it's too hot to cook.
Make it magical
The main ingredients in this recipe are chickpea and chilies, both of which are used for male fertility in historic magical practices. I'd say this recipe would make a pretty good fertility spell for anyone who is trying to get pregnant, with a willing partner, of course.
You could also call on the chickpea's power to help you beat the competition. Make this before a big game or a job interview, and call on the burst of energy from chili to bring about your victory more quickly.

Tips for making Harissa Hummus
This recipe is just my basic Easy Peanut Butter Hummus with some jarred harissa mixed in. Start with a can of chickpeas. If you can get a helper, you can take a few extra minutes to pop each bean out of its skin for a smoother texture, but this isn't strictly necessary. Add them to your food processor along with a clove of garlic, some olive oil, peanut butter or tahini, lemon juice, salt, and cumin. Process that all together, then add in some Greek yogurt and harissa paste until it's smooth and delicious.
I've given measurements below, but nothing is set in stone. I taste and adjust as needed. You may want more salt or more lemon juice. Just eyeball it and then make it taste the way that makes you happy.
Harissa comes from North Africa and probably originated in Tunisia. It's a paste of ground chili, paprika, olive oil, and other herbs and spices. Harissa means "to pound." You can certainly make your own or just buy a jar from your favorite shop or grocery store.
Harissa Hummus is my new favorite, and I think you'll love it too. Definitely give it a try and just try to prove me wrong.

Ingredients
- 1 can chickpeas aka garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed

Instructions
